WORK EXPERIENCE

Computer Consulting                                                                                                            1999-2002

Various contracts and projects undertaken help defray university costs including Y2K analysis and reporting on an Oracle data warehouse for a government ministry; network setup and installations, internet security, and firewall installations. Also independently bought, built, setup, sold, and serviced computer systems.

Systems House Laboratories (SHL), Victoria, BC                                                                4/96-9/96
Database Programmer (Coop Work Term)

Developed a client/server application for the BC Superannuation Commission called, “Microfilm Indexing System”, from a prototype developed in VB3/Access to deliverable using VB4 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 6.2. Also worked on teams to assist in the coding of two other applications: one, a VB3/Access application; the other, a VC++/Oracle/ProC/PL-SQL application.

Ministry of Employment and Investment, Victoria, BC                   5/94-9/94, 1/95-4/95, 1/96-4/96
Technical Support Analyst (Coop Work Terms)

Configured computer systems and solved problems for people working on Novell networked PC and Macintosh computers. Recognition of technical and interpersonal expertise led to my being given the opportunity to make purchasing recommendations. Between work terms, two university colleagues and I provided the branch with a systems analysis report that garnered attention for specific areas of improvement. On my second work term, I was assigned to projects where I provided network connectivity solutions and seminars on internet access.

Ministry of Transportation and Highways, Victoria, BC                                                  9/95-12/95
Network Support Analyst (Coop Work Term)

Installed and configured Linux on a 486 for evaluation. Configured and administered sendmail, pop3d, and inn news. It was so successful that it quickly became a production machine for those services. Installed and configured Linux on another 486 to complete my main assignment, which was to install, evaluate, and recommend freely available web servers.  A web server was selected and the ministry’s “Internet Services Offering Pilot” proceeded as planned.

Cooper Industries, Crouse-Hinds Division, Toronto, ON                                                  1990-1992
Computer Programming (Contract Work)

Independently contracted to design, develop, document, and install two product-labeling systems. Both included three custom applications: a simple, event-driven, GUI database program that combined product data from an IBM S/38 mainframe with vectorized, product graphics stored on a PC; a style designer application to produce layout specifications for sheets of variously sized labels; and, a resident postscript printer program to compose sheets of labels to specification.  The first system was used by line personnel to produce labels for a minor product line. The second system was used similarly to cover the company's entire product line (over 200,000 products); and, contained evolutionary enhancements to include UPC barcodes, as well as, UL and CSA logos.
